Sometimes I think about other people who are considered stupid. Given derogatory names by society in general, is it justifiable?
My personal philosophy in life is simple when it comes to levels of intelligence. It is based on the fact that I am not as intelligent as I want to be. I may know things that other people do not know, or I can do certain feats better than others. Still, I feel the inadequacy for having lesser knowledge. That’s why I continue to explore and study.
Often, we can be mean to somebody who we feel not up to our standard of comprehension. Before, I was guilty of such cruel behavior. (Well, that was up to that moment I heard the word uttered to me directly. It was painfully clear that the word hurts.)
Will it be fairer to say to someone that, “I know something you don’t know but you also know something I don’t know.”
There will always be people who are more endowed with intellect than others. But that should not be a reason to put someone down who are not in the same league.

When someone asks me about my IQ – I tell them I’m smart enough to know just how ignorant I am.
I noticed in all the wisdom writings of King Solomon, the only words he ever used to describe or judge people were in regards to their actions or deeds, wise or foolish.

I believe some of us often forget that getting educated means doing the right thing. But then, if we know what is right, we also know what is wrong. Once we stray from good deeds, then we are liable to commit the bad ones, which we often call foolish.

As to your question if teachers today fail to teach wise conduct, I believe they can only do so much while students are inside the classroom. The inputs of outside sources have more impact on how we humans behave.
I guess our being wise or foolish also depends on who is doing the judging.

Thanks for your kind comment. As for my remark implying teachers may be failing to teach wise conduct, it was not meant to criticize teachers personally, I have a daughter who is a teacher. In my humble opinion, school curriculum is somehow lacking to teach the subject of wisdom in relation to how their choices and conduct will affect their future.

I believe you are correct. Teachers do their job based on the curriculum. Government along with the private sector should work together to review the present curriculum and add more lessons about acquiring wisdom.

I trust you’ll find it to coincide with your views. I am very intelligent by popular rumor and IQ tests but that does not make me always right ( or interesting ) and there are many things for which I have neither the patience nor the inclination. Thus, in these fields, I am not “functionally intelligent” no matter what my abilities may be?
A- One should keep a modicum of humility and B- As a friend of mine once said : If we were all shoemakers, what would we eat?
Besides, if you are really intelligent, you try to raise others to it for company, not keep them down? 😉

I found this post very interesting. Sadly a lot of this “labeling” starts in childhood. It isn’t only other children and eventually adults who start the ball rolling. Schools and teachers who place students in remedial classes or refer to their abilities negatively cause a child to be labeled. I am not saying remedial classes should be discontinued. However there should be a better way of handling children who require more attention. Often it is not a question of intelligence but it is possible there is some learning disability that results in a student learning at a different pace or under specific conditions. My son is dyslexic and he had to find ways of dealing with the barrier. He has been able to do this and has even gone to college. He has an extensive knowledge of history (especially sports history). He will never be a physicist but his knowledge of the Civil War is incredible. He has taught his daughter never to call another person stupid. They may do something foolish or say something silly but stupid is not a nice word to use about someone. I think we need to use our words more carefully and take another’s feelings into consideration.
I truly sympathize with you. Some people usually do not think first before uttering that derogatory word.

I typically do not like thinking of others as stupid, etc. I fear that I must have serious issues myself to be so smug. When; however, I watch television shows like Cops and America’s Most Wanted, I feel forced to admit the sad truth that there really are stupid people out there.

A problem is just that a lot of people go thru life with a feeling they are stupid cause they been treated that way. And slowly they get more and more pissed off and decide to develope contempt for knowledge and intellectuals, forming right wing political messes and so the fascism is back. (Sweden) But you are absolutely righ, i got a friend that is kinda slow and need me to explain a lot but one time i showed him modernistic art and ‘plop’ WOOOW in a split second he ‘understood’ art. I told him so and he said he used to look for clues in such art and so it seem he got the clue in him all the time. =D
